It has been 2 days since the twins were born and we have quickly learned the seriousness of the NICU. These have not been easy days for them while they try and get used to the outside world.
Victors Update:
So this is the little guy that's gonna give us the most trouble when hes older because he is a fighter. Shortly after he was born he was doing really good, he was taking to the breathing machine very well. Early Sunday they were talking about taking him off the vent and putting him on a CPAP because he was handling everything well, that quickly changed and Sunday night they had to put him on a bigger ventilation machine. He also started to have a drop in blood pressure so they put him on some medication for that and that helped get his blood pressure stable. He has been doing good on the new ventilator when he started on it they were at 100% oxygen and is now around 30%. They also did a scan of his heart and right now its looking good nothing out of the ordinary. This kid is a fighter though they normally like them kind of bundled up and together but no matter what they did this boy threw himself about as you can see in that picture, and all of this while he was under some sedation medication stronger than morphine to try and help him relax all the nurses were shocked and said there is no way he should be moving the way he was so we know that we are gonna have alot on our hands with him. As of Monday night he was doing well, he was stable on the vent, they were lowering his blood pressure medication and he finally calmed down and got some rest.
Carlos Update:
So our little man Carlos he had a rough time from the start, he wasn't taking well to the vent they put him on so put him on the bigger one (JET). Carlos came out with alot of bruising so the put him under a UV light pretty quick to try and help with that as well with jaundice, they turned it off and took off his little sunglasses so we could get that picture of him. He was also put on a blood pressure medication to help with his low blood pressure and that helped him out alot. They took blood from him on Sunday and found that his blood sugar levels where high so they put him on a slow insulin drip, which is normal and what they expect from a baby born so young since his organs are not mature enough to keep everything up themselves. On Monday Carlos had his first blood transfusion which is normal since they take so much from him throughout the day doing different test. So at the end of Monday night they backed off a little both on the insulin and his blood pressure medication, both of which he seemed to be handling in pretty well. His oxygen levels have changed up and down throughout the two days and when we left Monday night he was at about 30% oxygen. Tomorrow (Tuesday) they will be doing a scan of his heart to see how he looks so it should be a big day for him.
I've read so many stories about babies in the NICU and have seen so many pictures of premature babies on the Internet knowing it could happen to us and I thought if I was ever in that position I would be able to handle it and I would be able to stay strong. I was wrong. Seeing my boys in their isolettes with all the tubes and wires was the hardest thing I have ever had to do it hurts so much to know that I can't do anything to help my boys but I know they are in good hands. Its just a day by day thing right now we have experienced good and bad days with both boys in just the first two days and we know that there will be more we are just thankful for everyday that passes and our boys are fighting strong.
